On 2-4 August at All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Breeding and Seed Production the Second International Scientific and Practical Conference «CURRENT TRENDS IN BREEDING AND SEED PRODUCTION OF VEGETABLE CROPS: TRADITIONS AND PROSPECTS» was held to be dedicated to 90 years since VNIISSOK was established.

Having come from all regions of Russian Federation tens of thousands of talented young people gathered together in All-Russian Educational Forum. The Agency for Young People's Affairs was a major organizer of the forum.

There is a role of vegetables in human nutrition in the article, and there are also main problems of vegetable growing industry that should be solved nowadays to provide food security of the country.

The article reports on breeding program for bee-pollinated cucumber (mellittophilae) carrying the resistance to F. oxisporum. Results of researches and a technique for selection of resistant young plantlets under the use of conventional and roll sowing methods in artificial infectious background were described.

This review gives facts concerning the ecological situation in the world. The ways how to organize the enhanced consumption of ecologically safe food were shown.

Indian radish (Raphanus sativus var.indicus Sinsk) is an annually growing plant belonging to Brassica family, and considered as new vegetable plant for Russia.

Sweet pepper, as one of the most important sources of vitamins and antioxidants, is a very necessary vegetable in human's food. In the article the detailed description of varieties and hybrids is given concerning also to the principals of pepper cultivation technology.

On 30^th August-lst September 2010 the EUCARPIA XIV^th Meeting on Genetics and Breeding of Capsicum and Eggplant was held in Valencia, Spain and focused on the enhancement of genetic recourses and practical aspects of Capsicum and Eggplant breeding.

Committee activity of VNIISSOK has been reactivated on PhD and masters theses D 220.019.01 (order of Federal Service on Education and Science Controlling from 14.05.2010 № 1030371). Three Phd works were written at the council meeting during October-November 2010

On 12^th September, 2010 the 110^th anniversary of Alexander Vasilevich Alpatiev's birthday, him who is an academician of VASKhNIL, Doctor in biological science, professor, Honored Scientist of RSFSR, Laureate of State Award has been wide known among scientific societies in Russia and many other countries. Such fame came to him owing to his inspiring hard-working, scientific professionalism and expertise in searching mysterious mechanisms that are responsible for economically valuable traits transferring into hybrid forms from the parental plants.

On 1 November a leading scientists of Russia in vegetable plant breeding and seed production, a head of Research Institute of Protected Vegetable Cultivation, professor, principal scientist in plant breeding Sergey Fedorovich Gavrish marks his 60^th birthday. His scientific achievements are the theoretical principals in new plant introduction, plant adaptation abilities, crop breeding and seed production. By virtue of his research work the current breeding methods have been improved and the ranges of new vegetable plants have been enlarged in Russia. His attainments and research work are widely known in Russia and other countries, and serve as practical and theoretical sources in vegetable crop breeding.
